JAPANESE INN:
A Reconstruction of the Past
By Oliver Statler, Random House, New York, 1961.
This is a book written through the long-standing calm and historic "Minaguchi-ya", an inconspicuous rural inn. Oliver Statler spent several years in Japan, came to love it, and considered this inn it's most historic place of calm and beauty, stubbornly holding on to the old ways of Japan. This is a book of the social history of Japan through 400 years, closely researched with many interviews. It is enhanced by 50 prints, many of them Hiroshige (including the jacket) .
