THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND. By Jules Verne, Grosset & Dunlap, New York.

Classic Fiction Novel / Adventure

Reissue. No publisher date (circa 1930).

Somewhat of a sequel to Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea and In Search of the Castaways, though a very different book in terms of theme, more similar to Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson (which were likely influences). Originally published in 1874.

The Mysterious Island follows the adventures of a group of castaways who use their survivalist savvy to build a functional community on an uncharted island. A hot-air balloon carrying five passengers and a dog escapes from Richmond, Va., during the American Civil War.

Based on the true story of Alexander Selkirk, who survived alone for almost five years on an uninhabited island off the coast of Chile, The Mysterious Island is considered by many to be Jules Verne's masterpiece.

Light brown hardcover with bold green title and picture of a ship. Secure binding with clean pages and birthday inscription (in ink) at the front illustrated endpaper (along with a small name and store stamp). About 8-1/4 x 5-1/2 with 500 pages. The jacket is rubbed with a small owner name stamp at the front, some small red ink at the rear and edge tears.
